There Is a Difference Between Carrying Responsibility and Carrying Everything
The invisible weight of a life with no empty spaces
I don't think we are as tired as we think we are.
I think we've quietly reached our capacity.
There's a difference.
Tiredness is what sleep fixes.
Capacity is what happens when life keeps asking for more than you have left to give.
You cannot keep borrowing energy from tomorrow to survive today.
For a while, it feels like you can. You push through one more deadline, one more event, one more responsibility. Tomorrow will somehow make up for today's deficit.
Until tomorrow arrives already owing another tomorrow.
Some weeks, it isn't work that breaks you.
It's work... Plus family responsibilities. Plus church. Plus the event you promised to help with. Plus the errands. Plus the messages waiting for replies. Plus the friend who needs you. Plus the plans you made for yourself that you never seem to have time for.
Individually, none of these things feel impossible.
Together, they become crushing.
And because none of them seem unreasonable on their own, we keep saying yes.
"I can manage."
"It's just for this week."
"I'll rest after this."
Until one week turns into another.
And another.
Then one day, someone asks how you're doing.
You pause.
Not because you don't know what to say.
But because you genuinely don't know how you feel anymore.
You aren't crying.
You aren't excited.
You aren't even angry.
You're just... functioning.
I think the most dangerous kind of exhaustion isn't being tired. It's forgetting what it feels like not to be.
When every week has been heavy for so long, exhaustion stops feeling temporary. It starts feeling like your personality. You forget what it was like to wake up with excitement, to have unstructured evenings, to laugh without checking the time or thinking about the next thing waiting for you.
Somewhere along the way, we've started wearing busyness like a badge of honour.
A packed calendar means you're productive.
Being constantly available means you're dependable.
Having no free time means you're doing something right.
But I don't think that's true.
I think we've confused being needed with being healthy.
The hardest part is that many of the things draining us are good things.
Work is good.
Serving is good.
Showing up for family is good.
Building a career is good.
Loving people is good.
The problem isn't that these things are bad. The problem is that they all keep drawing from the same person. You.
And no one can keep making withdrawals from the same account without ever making a deposit.
We often talk about pouring into others. Very few of us ask what happens when the cup itself begins to crack.
We spend so much time asking how much more we can carry that we rarely stop to ask whether we still have the capacity to carry it well.
Maybe that's why so many of us feel guilty for resting.
Sometimes the body says what the mind has been trying to whisper for months.
We wait until our bodies force us to stop.
Until sickness interrupts what boundaries should have prevented.
Until exhaustion becomes visible enough that people finally believe we're struggling.
But perhaps rest was never supposed to be an emergency response.
Perhaps it was supposed to be part of the rhythm.
I'm slowly learning that carrying responsibility does not mean carrying everything.
Some things can wait.
Some things can be delegated.
Some things deserve a "not this time."
Not because we don't care.
But because we do.
Because the version of you everyone depends on also deserves to exist outside of everyone else's expectations.
Your value was never meant to be measured by how much you can carry before you break.
Sometimes the strongest thing you can say isn't, "I've got it."
Sometimes it's, “I've reached my capacity."
Because even the strongest shoulders were never meant to carry everything.
And maybe that's not weakness.
Maybe that's wisdom.
You deserve to experience your life, not just survive your responsibilities.
All my love,
Star Girl Mercy ❤️

This is so real🥹
There are days where I want to scream I’ve reached my capacity but then there’s work all up in my face, there’s family ,even to show up for my own self already feels like a lot.
I believe that this too sha pass and we stop carrying weights that would end up crashing us in .
Love you right back star girl ❤️
